The National Sports Council (NSC) was established in 1981, the operations of the NSC are governed by a Sports Act. The Sports Act details all the operation and policy of the council. Since 1981, the council has transformed from a single staffed unit in Belize City to a well staffed and quipped office in Belize City, along with branches within the six Districts. The National Sports Council central focus is to develop, support and organized sports in the country. In view of this, the NSC works in collaboration with the Government of Belize, Schools, Private Sector and the various Sporting Associations. The National Sports Council is run by a Board with District Committees in every District. The object of the NSC is as Follows: Objectives: • To promote, develop and improve the knowledge and practice of sports in the interest of the well-being of and the enjoyment of leisure by Belizeans and for this purpose to appoint Commissioners for all or any sports; • To encourage in co-operation with the sporting organization the attainment of high standards in sports; • To foster, support or undertake in co-operation with the Ministry of Sports the provision of facilities for sport; • To assist and where possible develop proper coaching schemes which shall include the training of suitable personnel for all branches of sports; • To carry out or to encourage and support research and studies into matters concerning sports and to disseminate knowledge and • and advise on these matters; • To encourage participation in sporting events abroad by individuals and teams from Belize; • To own, establish, develop, improve, manage, maintain and take proper control of sporting facilities granted to or secured by the • Council and to supervise sporting events to which the public is admitted upon the payments of any direct or indirect fee; • Subject to the approval of the Minister, to borrow funds for the purposes of the business of the Council and to make grants or loans upon and subject to such conditions as may be prescribed by the Minister; • To carry on any sporting or sports related for the promotion of youth development; and • To advise the Minister on any matters concerned directly or indirectly with the foregoing. Board Members: In an effort to create public awareness, Collaboration, assistance and funds for the NSC programs, the NSC is spearheaded by a Board of Directors. The Board of Directors is the highest decision making body of the council. The Board acts in accordance with the Sports Act. The Board comprising of 14 members is appointed by the Minister of Sports.
